Was für ein Jahr – What a year

Dieses Jahr startete sehr ruhig, füllte sich aber sehr schnell mit vielen Aufgaben.
Just wow, von vielen Shootings, Workshops, TV Drehs, Shootings mit Feuer, bis über die Artikel, die ich für c’t Digitale Fotografie geschrieben habe, bis zu vielen anderen Veröffentlichungen, hat sich wirklich sehr viel getan
Dafür möchte ich mich heute bedanken, und zwar bei all meinen Kunden und Lesern, aber auch bei Pro-Digital, Hensel, Canon, diyphography, DPreview, Fstoppers, Gemeinde Muckendorf Wipfing, ct digitale Fotografie, Metafilm, Museum Atelier Seidel, ORF, Petapixel, Shotkit, Tether Tools, ThePhoblographer und Tricflash
Last but not least auch ein großes Danke an Alex, die in diesem verrückten Jahr immer geholfen hat wo es nur ging.
Das nächste Jahr kündigt sich auch schon an, mit einem weiteren spannenden Artikel in der c’t digitalen Fotografie, einem Video an dem ich schon seit einiger Zeit arbeite, ein ganz spezielles Portraitshooting und noch viel viel mehr.

This year started slow but transformed to a hell of a ride 🙂
Just wow, starting from lots of shootings, workshops, TV filmings, shootings with fire, to the articles I wrote for c’t digitale Fotografie and other publications happened a lot.

Portrait shooting with actress Glenna Weber – iPhone or DSLR?

Ich schreibe gerade einen Artikel für die Zeitschrift c’t Digitale-Fotografie, wobei ich das iPhone mit einer aktuellen Spiegelreflex vergleiche. Dabei habe ich die Schauspielerin Glenna Weber abgelichtet. Bis die Zeitschrift erscheint, dürft ihr raten, welches Foto von einer Canon EOS 5D Mk IV und welches von einem iPhone 8 Plus erstellt wurde. Die Hensel Blitze am iPhone habe ich mit dem Tric Flash trigger am iPhone gesynct – www.tricflash.com – bei Softwareproblemen antwortet diese Firma wirklich flott, toller support!. Antwortet in den Comments und ich schicke dem Ersten, der richtig geantwortet hat eine Zeitschrift zu.

Right now I’m writing an iPhone vs DSLR article for the magazine c’t Digitale-Fotografie, where I did a portrait shooting with the actress Glenna Weber. Until the magazine is released you can guess what picture I shot with the iPhone 8 Plus and which one
I shot with my Canon EOS 5D MK IV. I synced the Hensel Strobes and the iPhone with the Tric Flash trigger – www.tricflash.com – these guys have a great support!!! The first who posts the right answer in the comment section gets a free magazine.

Making-of and Video Workshop of Ultra Large Format Wet Plates

Mit diesen Videos und Fotos gebe ich euch die Möglichkeit, in meine geliebte Welt der Kollodium-Nassplattenfotografie einzutauchen.
Das beinhaltet diesmal auch das Reisen mit Equipment und Chemie. Für die selbsterstellte Chemie habe ich mir einen eigenen luftdichten und stoßfesten Koffer von Explorer Cases gekauft, damit die Autofahrt nicht zum Glückspiel wird. Dieser Prozess erzwingt eine natürliche Entschleunigung und verlangt nach dem Kontrollfreak in euch. Nur damit könnt ihr alle Tasks gründlich vorbereiten und erzielt das gewünschte Ergebnis. Vielleicht könnt ihr euch jetzt vorstellen, dass es eine Herausforderung war die 360 Grad Kamera während dieses Prozesses zu tragen.
Viel Spaß mit meinem kurzen Video und holt euch so viel Informationen wie ihr könnt aus dem längeren 360 Grad Video.

With this videos and pictures, I want to bring you guys into my loved wet plate collodion world.
The whole process forces you to slow down (like a natural deceleration) and to become a control freak somehow. You must plan every little thing in advance to be able to master this process. By the way, I travel with a large air sealed rugged box from Explorer Cases, to be save in case auf an accident.
To carry my Insta360 One Camera with me during that shooting was quite challenging as well. Enjoy the short video and suck as much information as you like out of the long 360-degree video.

Crazy 360 Video of my Halloween Wet Plate Shoot

Ein Nassplatten-Shooting für Halloween stand diesmal auf dem Plan. Neben eher klassischen Halloween Motiven, wollte ich auch ein passendes Motiv für mich finden. Durch die Chemikalien bei den Vorbereitungen und wegen dem historische Prozess beim Shooting fühle ich mich immer wie Walter White “Heisenberg” (Bryan Cranston) von der TV Serie Breaking Bad.
Mit meiner 360 Grad Kamera habe ich die Entstehung dokumentiert, so verbinde ich die neueste Technik mit einem 160 Jahre alten Prozess.
Danke nochmal an Alex für die Unterstützung beim Shooting!!
Wie ihr sehen könnt, ist mein Selbstportrait sehr unrein an den Rändern. Diese Verunreinigungen habe ich durch das “nicht Reinigen” der Plattenkanten nach dem Silbernitratbad und der Kassette erreicht. Genau das macht die Platte noch einzigartiger. Außerdem liebe ich die Schärfe und die Schärfentiefe des Petzval Objektivs (ein Dallmeyer Petzval 2B 210mm F3,5 von ca. 1860). Und genau wegen diesem lichtstarten Objektiv läuft mein 6000W Hensel Tria Generator nur auf halber Leistung und das tortz verwendeter Softbox! Als Info: Nassplatten haben eine Lichtempfindlichkeit ähnlich ISO 0.5!

Why not do some Halloween Wet Plates – sure!
A Skull – A Mask and a Walter White “Heisenberg” (Bryan Cranston) themed Plate inspired from the TV Show Breaking Bad. I feel always like him when I prepare the chemicals for my collodion wet plate process. This is the first time, I combined this self-portrait with a 360-degree camera for the making-of video.
Combining hi-tech with a 160 year old process is fun 🙂

My self-portrait is pretty dirty on the borders of the plate as you can see. I achieved that with “not cleaning” the edges of the plates after the silver bath and not cleaning the plate holder. I think this makes this plate even more unique – it’s not all the time about perfection.
Beside this, I love the sharpness and the depth of field of that Dallmeyer Petzval 2B lens from about 1860 (its a 210mm F 3.5). This fast lens is also the reason my 6000 Watts Hensel Tria generator only runs on half power, even I used a softbox.
The palte has a ISO like sensitivity from about 0.5!

Am Wochenende fand mein Portraitworkshop statt.
Neben dem Umgang mit Menschen vor der Kamera, habe ich auch technische Themen wie TTL und HSS blitzen angesprochen. Nach über 10 Stunden Vorführung und Informationen habe ich rauchende Köpfe gesehen 🙂

How to take care about the people infront of the camera wa a topic, as well as TTL and HSS with Canon Strobes. After About 10 Hours information I saw smoke above the heads 😉

Bei diesen Workshop habe ich wieder viele tolle Menschen kennenlernen dürfen. Über eine will ich gerne etwas mehr erzählen.
Christiane hat 6 Stunden Fahrt von Berlin auf sich genommen um bei meinem Workshop teilzunehmen. Hier ein Bild, mit den Bildern 🙂
Was mich sehr berührt und begeistert hat, ist die Tatsache, dass Christiane schon in der 5. Generation als Fotografin arbeitet. Nehmt euch nochmal einen Moment Zeit und denkt darüber nach. In der FÜNFTEN Generation!!! Das ist heutzutage selten. In unserer schnelllebigen Zeit ist es schon sehr selten, wenn jemand sein Leben lang den selben Job macht – gar nicht zu reden von 5 Generationen. Hier eine kleine Übersicht:

I enjoyed to meet so many great people there. About one of them I want to write a little more today.
Christiane drove 6 hours to be able to attend to my workshop. Here you see a picture with two tintypes we made together in the group.
What really touched me is the fact, that Christiane is the 5th generation photographer in her family.
Hold on for a moment and think about it again: in the 5th generation!!!
Nowadays its very seldom that somebody works in the company until he retires. Now think about 5 generations. Check out the Overview from her family business:

The next thing that makes me happy is the last email I got from her.
