Wet Plate Talk and Menschenbilder Exhibition in Judenburg

Letzte Woche war ich bei der tollen Menschenbildereröffnung in Judenburg dabei. Außerdem hielt ich gleich zwei Vorträge über den Kollodium-Nassplattenprozess und über meine Herangehensweise beim Porträtieren mit diesem historischen Verfahren im Murtal Museum. Dabei hatte ich viel Spaß und lernte auch viele tolle Menschen kennen. Judenburg ist immer einen Besuch wert, neben den Menschenbildern und dem Museum gibt es auch noch das schöne Puchmuseum und den beeindruckenden Sternenturm zu sehen. Danke an Heinz Mitteregger, Karoline Straner und Philipp Odelga für die Fotos von mir. Zusätzlich nochmal Danke für die Einladung!

Last week I was at the amazing Human Pictures (Menschenbilder) exhibition in Judenburg . Additionally I had two talks about the collodion wet plate process and how I approach my portraits with this technique in the Murtal Museum. I had so much fun there and met so many great people. If you are in Austria, you will like you visit in Judenburg, Beside the Museum and the current exhibition, you can visit the Puchmuseum and the planetarium Sternenturm. Thanks a lot to Heinz Mitteregger, Karoline Straner and Philipp Odelga for the photographs of myself. Also thanks a lot for the invitation.

My Wet Plate Portrait of Paul at the Menschenbilder 2020 exhibition

Ich bin wieder sehr stolz, dass ich es auch dieses Jahr mit einem Porträt auf Kollodium-Nassplatte zu den Menschenbildern geschafft habe. Ein so ehrlich lachendes Porträt auf Kollodium-Nassplatte zu erstellen ist eine Herausforderung, dennoch ist es mir gelungen. Deshalb ist die Freude um so größer, dass es das Porträt von Paul zu den Menschenbildern geschafft hat. An dieser Stelle möchte ich mich sehr herzlich bei der Innung der Niederösterreichischen Berufsfotografen für Organisation der Menschenbilder bedanken.

I am very proud that my collodion wet plate portrait of Paul made it again to the Menschenbilder exhibition (pictures of humans exhibition)
As many of you may know, it is very tough to do a collodion wet plate with this hones happy expression. This makes it double sweet to see it in that large size. This is only possible because of our professional photography association – Thanks a lot for organizing such great contests/exhibitions!

Inspired Series – Hans Gerlach – Christian Jungwirth – Wolfgang Mlakar

I met Hans by accident when I bought a part for my tripod on Ebay. After some calls we decided to do a project together. Check the outcome of it here: https://blog.markus-hofstaetter.at/2021/09/a-170-year-old-process-and-high-end-food-photography/ When I worked with Hans Gerlach this project, his passion about cooking and setting up a scene on a plate inspired me. Every tiny little thing was placed carefully and at the end of every session I got to eat the most wonderful food you can imagine. In the first portrait he hold a pair of tweezers, a tool he used a lot during our work together.
Christian Jungwirth @atelierjungwieth
I met Christian the first time during a Menschenbilder exhibition. He invited us to visit his atelier in Graz. It was a great experience to get a private tour through all these famous artworks of well known photographers. He organises lots of other exhibitions, one of them was the amazing Steve McCurry in Graz. Backlit portraits in an enormous size. Steve McCurry inspired me a lot and standing in front of these huge portraits made my eyes wet. Christian is also an internationally popular commercial and magazine photographer. His work is stunning. Lots of people here in Austria know his famous chocolate covered portrait of Mr. Zotter of Zotter Chocolate
Wolfgang Mlakar
This Storie starts a little bit different. I met Wolfgang during a wet plate portrait session in Graz. He came up to me ans asked if I could do a portrait of him in his lighthouse keeper outfit. Austria is not famous for lighthouses, so I was interested what is behind all of this. He die a lot in his life, he was a forma photographer, he has a Diploma in Education for people with special needs, he worked as a photographer for the army and much more. He then had a rough time and needed to step back. He still needs help with some tasks, but at some point he decided for himself, that this can not be everything and started to help people who are in the need of help. With that he brings light into their lives.
It was a busy shooting day, but I figured If I let him sit down by the window with his little lighthouse, it makes the most of sense.

Wet Plate rewind 2019

2019 ein Rückblick
In diesem Jahr gab es wieder viele spannende Projekte. Neben digitale Arbeiten gab es auch einige Fachartikel in der c’t Digitale Fotografie. Doch mein Hauptaugenmerk in diesem Jahr sollte die Kollodium-Nassplattenfotografie sein:
Workshops
Ich habe über 30 Teilnehmern die Nassplattenfotografie näher gebracht. Diesmal waren auch einige Einzelcoachings im Studio dabei. Wobei manche Teilnehmer auch eine größere Anreise in Kauf genommen haben. Neben Deutschland, Ungarn und der Schweiz, hatte ich auch einen Teilnehmer aus Israel bei mir im Studio. Auch im nächsten Jahr gibt es wieder Workshop bei netpixel.at Kunstfabrik Wien und bei der Lightbox-Academy
Videos
Ihr fragt euch vielleicht wie diese Leute zu mir gefunden haben. Daran ist unter anderem auch mein YouTube Kanal schuld. Am Anfang des Jahres hatte ich dort um die 300 Abonnentinnen. Da sich einige meiner Videos gut verbreitet haben, sind es jetzt über 2000!
Mathieu Stern / Experimental Photographer / Viral Filmmaker hat eine Doku über meine Arbeit für seinen Kanal gedreht, die es sogar bis ins Amerikanische Fernsehen geschafft hat. Die Kulturvernetzung Niederösterreich hat mit seinem tollen Team einen Imagefilm über meine Arbeit gedreht und zusätzlich durfte ich einen historischen Fotografen in der Metafilm Doku für den ORF über Königin Viktoria spielen
Wettbewerbe
Auch 2019 wurden meine Nassplattenporträts nominiert.Für die Starken Frauen bei der Festival La Gacilly-Baden Photo in Baden wurde das Porträt von Katharina Gallhuber ausgewählt. Bei der Menschenbilderausstellung in Niederösterreich gab es das Porträt von dem Israelischen Fotografen Gabriel Baharlia zu sehen. Mit dem selben Porträt bin ich für unser Land bei dem World Photographic Cup nominiert worden.
Nassplattenporträts vor Ort
Seit diesem Jahr kann man mich auch außerhalb von meinem Studio buchen. Aus diesem Grund waren wir bei der tollen 180 Jahre Fotografie Veranstaltung mit der Wiener Innung im WestLicht. Schauplatz für Fotografie. Auch auf der Photo+Adventureporträtierten wir viele Menschen. In Niederösterreich besuchten wir mit meiner 150 Jahre alten Kamera die Schallaburg . Dort gab es zusätzlich noch eine Nassplattenausstellung.
Das schönste an diesen ganzen Erlebnissen, sind die tollen Menschen, die ich dabei kennenlernen durfte. Vielen Dank an alle, die ich getroffen habe und die mitgeholfen haben in diesem Jahr! Besonderen Dank an Alex und Thom!

I’m very grateful for this year. It was fulfilled with wet plate collodion photography.More than 30 people took classes in my public and private workshops. Some travelled from other countries to my studio. My YouTube wet plate Channel gained about 1700 subscriptions this year to start with more than 2000 in 2020. Beside that there was an image video done by the @kulturvernetzung_noe about my work as also @mathieustern did. My wet plate portraits were selected for the strong woman portraits at @lagacillyphoto in Baden, for the human pictures in lower austria and nominated for the world photographic cup. I shot many wet plates on location at the @westlichtvienna , @schallaburg_at (I had an exhibition there too) and @photoadventure_at The most beautiful thing during this experiences are the great people I met. Thanks to all of you guys. Special thanks to Alex, Thomas and @baharlia for the portrait of me.
