Nassplattenworkshop in Wien Teil II

Bald startet der zweite Workshop in Wien – 4 Plätze davon sind schon vergeben
In meinem Workshop erfahrt ihr alles über die Nassplattenfotografie und lichtet selber Portraits mit dem professionellen Equipment von der Firma Hensel ab.
Ich freue mich, dass diesmal der Workshop in der Kunstfabrik stattfindet und somit für viele von euch einfacher zu erreichen ist.
Wie immer werden wir gemeinsam viel Spaß beim Erlernen der Kollodium Nassplattentechnik haben. Ich nehme meine über 100 Jahre alte Reisekamera samt 150 Jahre altem Petzvall Objektiv mit.
Damit können wir den einzigartigen Look von historischen Porträts sehr schön nachstellen.

Soon my second workshop starts in Vienna – it’s close to be sold out.
We will have a lot of fun in the Kunstfabrik. This is an awesome place with tons of workshops.
I will take my over 100 years old camera and a 150 years old lens with me. We need a lot of power to get enough light on the plates. Thats the reason, we will use the 6000 W generator and strobe head from Hensel.
At the end of the day we will produce the beautiful look of this historical portraits. Doing this is always a great experience.

Goodbye Ted
This is a non photography post is and English only:
People who read this blog since the beginning know that my favorite pool hall is in Chicago.
People how don’t read my blog since the beginning know maybe this sign from the Internet:
Maries Golden Cue
If you follow this sign, you will find a beautiful oldschool pool hall with Brunswick original Goldcrowns.
It’s like you went back in time because everything looks new and in perfect condition. But a beautiful pool hall by itself is not a place I would visit. For me, it always depends on the owner if I feel comfortable in such a place. And with Ted it doesn’t get easier like that. He was such a great guy. So easy to talk with and had always a nice story to tell.
I remember when he told me once about a movie team that came to his pool hall and asked if they are allowed to shoot a movie the next day. Happily, he agreed. He and his wife started to clean up the whole pool hall overnight (I think it was not his idea 😉 ).
The next day the movie team arrived as they said. They had a short look into the pool hall, told Ted it is to clean and decided to do the movie in Chris’s Billiards – that from now on is known as the place of The Color of Money with Paul Newman, Tom Cruise and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.
Ted was still smiling the whole time during talking about that day.
Ted Minassian passed away after fighting cancer on the 23 of August 2018. We will miss him, but I’m sure he has a good time at another place now and maybe he still breaks them as hard as he did in Marie’s Golden Cue.

Wet Plate Workshop Kunstfabrik Wien

Dieser Nassplattenworkshop fand in der Kunstfabrik in Wien statt. Ein Ort voller Künstler, also genau richtig für so einen Workshop.
Das Schöne an der Kunstfabrik ist das große Platzangebot. Neben der Dunkelkammer hatten wir auch einen eigenen Beschichtungsraum und einen riesigen Saal zum Fotografieren. Wie immer hatten wir viel Spaß und haben dabei noch richtig schöne Portraits erstellt – Gratulation an alle Teilnehmer! Im folgenden Video bin ich diesmal kurz auf eine andere Seite der Vorbereitung für den Workshop eingegangen. Danach könnt ihr gut sehen wie viel Spaß wir dabei hatten 🙂

This time I held my wet plate workshop in Vienna in the Kunstfabrik (the translation would mean art factory). This is a place for artists, where you can book painting workshops and other master classes. As you can imagine, this is also the right place to hold a wet plate workshop.
 
There was lots of space at the Kunstfabrik, beside of the darkroom, we had our own room for pouring the plates and also a large hall for shooting our portraits. It was so much fun to work with all participants and we also created some great portraits. Congrats to all of you for that. This time I show you another side of the Workshop in the following video, after that you get an Idea how much fun we had.

Shooting wet plates handheld – yes it is possible and I did it Steampunk style! – my 4-months long journey on video

Ich hatte schon lange die Idee Nassplatten aus der Hand zu fotografieren, doch dauerte die Umsetzung dafür sehr lange. Meine 4 Monate lange Reise vom Kauf, über die Renovierung bis zum Shooting könnt ihr euch in diesem Video ansehen. Auch wenn ich nur auf kleine Platten fotografiert habe, benötiget ich doch die 6000 bis 7000 Watt meiner Hensel-Blitze, da ich eine Softbox mit Wabe benutzte. Endlich kann ich kreativer bei einem Nassplattenshooting arbeiten (Doppelbelichtung zb). Das Steampunk Thema passt hier sehr gut mit der Mischung aus der fast 100 Jahre alten Kamera und den neuen Teilen zusammen. Viel Spaß beim Video und den Fotos!

The idea for that was born pretty early but it took me a very long time to make it.
In the video you can watch my journey from buying to renovating and finishing the nearly 100 year old camera. After that you can enjoy the behind the scenes of the wet plate collodion shooting. Even these are small plates, I had to use sometimes 6000-7000 Wats of Hensel strobe power to get enough light thru the grided softbox. Finally I can be more creative during a wet plate shoot (double exposure for example) The mixture of new and old materials during the renovation fits really good to the Steampunk themed shoot. Crazy 360 Video of my Halloween Wet Plate Shoot

Ein Nassplatten-Shooting für Halloween stand diesmal auf dem Plan. Neben eher klassischen Halloween Motiven, wollte ich auch ein passendes Motiv für mich finden. Durch die Chemikalien bei den Vorbereitungen und wegen dem historische Prozess beim Shooting fühle ich mich immer wie Walter White “Heisenberg” (Bryan Cranston) von der TV Serie Breaking Bad.
Mit meiner 360 Grad Kamera habe ich die Entstehung dokumentiert, so verbinde ich die neueste Technik mit einem 160 Jahre alten Prozess.

Wie ihr sehen könnt, ist mein Selbstportrait sehr unrein an den Rändern. Diese Verunreinigungen habe ich durch das “nicht Reinigen” der Plattenkanten nach dem Silbernitratbad und der Kassette erreicht. Genau das macht die Platte noch einzigartiger. Außerdem liebe ich die Schärfe und die Schärfentiefe des Petzval Objektivs (ein Dallmeyer Petzval 2B 210mm F3,5 von ca. 1860). Und genau wegen diesem lichtstarten Objektiv läuft mein 6000W Hensel Tria Generator nur auf halber Leistung und das tortz verwendeter Softbox! Als Info: Nassplatten haben eine Lichtempfindlichkeit ähnlich ISO 0.5!

Why not do some Halloween Wet Plates – sure!
A Skull – A Mask and a Walter White “Heisenberg” (Bryan Cranston) themed Plate inspired from the TV Show Breaking Bad. I feel always like him when I prepare the chemicals for my collodion wet plate process. This is the first time, I combined this self-portrait with a 360-degree camera for the making-of video.
Combining hi-tech with a 160 year old process is fun 🙂

My self-portrait is pretty dirty on the borders of the plate as you can see. I achieved that with “not cleaning” the edges of the plates after the silver bath and not cleaning the plate holder. I think this makes this plate even more unique – it’s not all the time about perfection.
Beside this, I love the sharpness and the depth of field of that Dallmeyer Petzval 2B lens from about 1860 (its a 210mm F 3.5). This fast lens is also the reason my 6000 Watts Hensel Tria generator only runs on half power, even I used a softbox.
The palte has a ISO like sensitivity from about 0.5!

Love on Fire – ein Hochzeitsshooting der Elemente

Zuerstmal das Ergebnis vom Shooting:
Das Hotrods on Fire Shooting hat mich zu diesem inspiriert. Mit dem großen Unterschied, dass dieses Foto aus einer einzigen Belichtung gemacht wurde. Nach viel Vorbereitung habe wir es geschafft – eine knapp 3 Meter hohe Selbstbaufackel, zwei Blitze und 4.4 Sekunden Belichtung ließen dieses Bild entstehen.
Die Planung war diesmal viel Aufwändiger, da wir für die Reflektion einen kleinen Teich im Garten samt Podest aufgebaut haben. Außerdem habe ich einen Baum zurückschneiden müssen, damit wir genug Platz haben. Hier auch gleich nochmal vielen Dank an die Freiwillige Feuerwehr Muckendorf- Wipfing für den Hitzeschutzanzug.
Meine Einkaufsliste war auch ganz beachtlich, vom Riesenkevlardocht, über ein geruchsneutrales Lampenöl (hier vielen Dank an die Facebook Gruppe Feuerspucker und Feuerkünstler für alle wichtigen Infos), einem Kochtopf, eine Stahlstange, Karabiner, Ketten, Leintücher bis hin zur Teichfolie und noch viel mehr.
Sich richtig viel Zeit nehmen für nur ein Foto, das kommt sicher auch von meiner Nassplattenfotografie. Der Moment nach dem Shooting, wenn man sieht, dass der Plan aufgegangen ist und die Idee im Kopf zum Bild wurde, ist unbezahlbar.
Ich liebe diese Planungs- und Vorbereitungsphase sehr.
Die Objektivauswahl fiel wieder auf das 35mm an meiner Canon 5D. Anfangs fotografierte ich nur mit einem Blitz samt Wabe, aber es war schnell klar, dass ein zweiter Blitz zur besseren Ausleuchtung notwendig war.
Sicherheit geht vor, deshalb haben wir hier auch sämtliche Vorsichtsmaßnahmen getroffen. Vor dem Shooting wurde nochmal der ganze Garten befeuchtet, damit nichts zu Brennen beginnen kann.
Außerdem sind für so ein Shooting viele Hände sehr hilfreich. Deshalb auch gleich nochmal Danke an Alex, Wolfgang und Sebastian. Auch Danke an Veronika & Andreas für eure Geduld, diese hat sich Bezahlt gemacht und dafür habt ihr ein einzigartiges Foto bekommen, an das ihr euch lange erinnern werdet.

First of all the result:
The Hot rod on Fire Shooting inspired me to this one. But there was a huge difference, this photograph was done with only one exposure. We got it done after a lot of preparation – a nearly 3-Meter-long diy fire torch, two strobes and a 4.4 Seconds exposure created this image.
Planning did take this time much longer, because we had to build a small pond including a platform for the reflection. Additionally, I had to cut down some branches from a tree to get enough space.
First of all thanks to the fire departnemnt Muckendorf- Wipfing for the heat-proof suit. My shopping list was huge, from odorless lamp oil (thanks a lot to the Facebook group Feuerspucker und Feuerkünstler for all the information), to a cooking pot, an aluminum bar, carabiners, chains, damp sheets, till a pool liner and much more.
I love taking lots of time for just one photograph. I’m sure that comes from my wet plate photography. The moment when you see everything worked out like you imagined after the shooting is priceless.
I used again the 35mm lens and my Canon 5D. I started with only one strobe, but had to add a second one later to get a better light on the wedding couple.
Safety first, because of that we did a lot of precautions before the shooting, to moisten the whole backyard for example. Beside of that, it is helpful to have many helping hands. Thanks to Alex, Wolfgang and Sebastian for that! Also, a big thanks to Veronika and Andreas for your patience. In exchange for that you got a unique photograph and a memory you will remember.
