Inspired – Borut Peterlin – photographer and wet plate artist

Borut’s work is very inspiring, he works with so much passion on his beautiful artworks. His documentations on his Youtube Channel are artworks by themselves. Shooting Wet Plate Portraits with an affordable Large Format Bokeh Monster

I should stop calling these “Short Projects” short projects. It didn’t take that long, but still longer as expected.
After I bought it at the Camera Obscura Festival
But I still think if you are looking for a affordable large format wet plate camera, you should have a look at the Mentor camera brand. Most of them are build like a tank (Remember, I got another Mentor too, where I did double exposures with: https://youtu.be/y0ccDnXw9xE) and easy to repair. The cool thing of this camera is the curtain shutter and strobe connector. It has also all movements you can imagine, great for architecture, product (or food) photography.
For the wet plate process, you want to look for a fast lens, but these are mostly pretty expensive. Thats why projection lenses are a good options, but most of them are triplet designs – but there are others too, like the Leitz Hektor 200mm F 2.5 that covers 13x18cm plates in portrait distance easily and has 4 glass elements instead of the classic triplets. be aware that the depth of field is razor thin on that lens. I have a second one for sale here http://gear.mhaustria.com with other camera gear I only use very rarely. So I would be happy if this finds someone who uses it again. I just collected to much gear….
In the video, I show you how I repair all the little blemishes of the camera and add two Lenses to it. I even build two lens plateadapters. One to mount lenses from my Century camera to the Mentor and one to mount Linhof Lenses to the Century camera. Check my Thingverse too, I will post some of them there if I am happy with them. . The more I get comfortable with my 3D printer the more I use it, that reflects also in this project. Even some prints take pretty long (my longest one was 16 hours), it saves me lots of time, because I can do different things in-between. And some of the designs would have been much harder to create with traditional wood/metal working.
I really like how the camera, lens plates and wet plate holder turned out. This will be used on many during my workshops (for English ones contact me here)in the future And I am also very happy that Tanja of https://www.unikat.pictures/ helped me out to model for me. Thanks a lot!

How to create Waterhouse stops for antique lenses

Large format photographers who work with antique Petzval lenses know the hassle. You get a pretty new brass lens, but there are no Waterhouse stops included. “Hey I don’t care, I shoot anyways wide open all the time” some might say. With some, I also include me. But then you find yourself on a very sunny day and struggle with doing a very quick exposure, like here https://youtu.be/nStEK3zV5tA?t=438 (and you will end up anyways with an overexposed image, even with the not so light sensitive wet plate process). Oh yes, and there is also the creative point of stopping down your lens – but wait, who really does that if you can have a dreamy, swirly Petzval bokeh, right? 🙂 Just kidding, I would have needed these Waterhouse stop more often than I thought of. That’s why I finally 3D printed them (there is also another option) and did a tutorial for you guys, so you can make them too without having to much trouble. At the end I also decided to make carrying case for them, to have them in a safe place. The First Analog Photography Festival After The Pandemic

This was such a great experience! It was not only great to meet people again at the Camera Obscura Festival, but it was also awesome to meet artists that are interested in an analog workflow. Another great thing is, that this festival is not an exclusive “wet plate event” it is also for people who work with the analog medium in any way. That was so cool, with this option you will experience things you may not have seen before. Like Large Format Cameras build from Legos. Inspired

Today I want to inspire you with amazing people in front and behind my camera with my new collodion wet plate portrait project “inspired”. This project will be published in a book, register here to get the latest news about it inspired.mhaustria.com.

It all started with a Dallmeyer 3B Petzval lens, my dream lens that finally found the way to me. Denis of wetplatedreams.com found it for me. The condition is amazing. So is also the date from when it was made – it’s from 1876.

Denis is such a passionate person with a lot of knowledge when it comes to historic lenses and cameras.

And then there is Andreas – his passion is the building process of lens caps. It’s like he is meditating during the process of making one of his beauties. Unthinkable these days that somebody works 5+ hour on a lens cap, but he does. You can see in the video how beautiful one of his outcomes is.

There were also lots of other people involved who made my inspired portrait project possible. Like Mr. Dallmeyer or Mr. Petzval. More about these gentlemen in my video.

Now I want to talk about the people that were in front of my camera. 
One of them is Michael White – a former Producer/Director/Author.
His historical documentary – Azorian The Raising of the K-129 has received international praise and has been shown by Networks in the US, Europe, Australasia, Asia.
Also his Book over the same story – Project Azorian the CIA and the Raising of the K-129 received positive critics in the US and worldwide. 
He worked as special effects technician in his earlier career on many well known movies, like Superman the Movie, Flash Gordon, The Pink Panther, The Never Ending Story Enemy Mine, for name a few.

Another person that inspires me with his work is the tattoo artist Manuel Soultan. His tattoos look like vivid three dimensional photographs. He designs every artwork by himself to create a one of a kind tattoo. Bringing a 140 Year Old Photographic Relic Back to Life

“Gleich kommt’s Vögelchen raus”. Das haben meine Eltern immer gesagt, damit ich beim Fotografieren in die Kamera schaue. Viele von euch werden sich sicher auch noch an diesen Spruch erinnern können. Mit dem heutigen Video zeige ich euch den Uhrsprung dieser Aussage und bringe ein 140 Jahre altes Relikt wieder zum leben.



Diese Webseite berichtet, dass die erste Erwähnung dieses Fotografischen Relikts 1879 statt fand.


In einer Ausgabe der „Photographic News“ wurde ein Artikel von C.W. Davis veröffentlicht, der auf einen  mechanischer Vogel verweist, welcher  zwitschert wenn man einen pneumatischen Balgen betätigt.
Ich habe mich gegen die pneumatische Lösung entschieden, da ich eine Hand für die Objektivkappe und die zweite Hand für den Blitzauslöser benötige. Das Auslösen des Messing-Vogels mit dem Fuß war mir zu umständlich.


Oscar Schwarzkopf hat sein Patent 1445362 von 1923 als „toy bird songster“ benannt. Zur selben Zeit wurde auch ein “Victory Canary Songster” mit der Patentnummer 2073922 patentiert. Mehr Patente und Illustrationen gibt es hier: http://www.luminous-lint.com/__phv_app.php?/f/_watch_the_birdie_01/
Es würde auch Sinn ergeben, dass die ersten Modelle dieser Vögel sich nicht bewegt haben, damit längere Belichtungszeiten eingehalten werden können.


Je mobiler und kleiner die Kameras wurden, desto weniger „Vögelchen“ waren im Einsatz. Aber bis zum heutigen Tag kennen trotzdem noch viele diesen bekannten Ausdruck. Wenn euch diese Geschichte gefällt, teilt sie um das „Vogal“ (öster. Vögelchen) am Leben zu erhalten.


Momentan hat Covid19 wieder Hochsaison in Österreich, deshalb muß der Messingvogel noch auf seinen Einsatz etwas warten – irgendwann wird er mit Sicherheit bei einem Nassplattenshooting ein Kind zum Lachen bringen.

“Watch the Birdie” – thats what my parents told me, to make sure I look into the camera before they took a photo of me. I guess lots of you guys remember this saying. With the renovation of a 140 year old historic brass birdie, I show you the origin of this phrase. Check out the video bellow.



As this website reports, the earliest sightings of this kind of photographic “tool” was found back in 1879.


An issue of the “Photogarphic News” contained an article from C.W. Davis, that mentioned back then, that photographers were able to buy a mechanical bird that chirped when a pneumatic bulb was squeezed. 
I decided against that bulb, because I need one hand for the lens cap and the second one for the strobe. And I didn’t want to use my feet for squeezing.

It also would make sense if early birdies had no moving parts, so the photographer can achieve a longer exposure time without the kid moving.


As more portable and smaller cameras were invented, the less “birdies” were seen. But until today most people still know that famous phrase. Lets spread the word to keep this great phrase alive.



Covid19 is again spreading a lot in Austria, thats the reason I had to postpone a wet plate shooting with the brass birdie. As soon as everything gets better, I will catch up with it.

Wet Plate Talk and Menschenbilder Exhibition in Judenburg

Letzte Woche war ich bei der tollen Menschenbildereröffnung in Judenburg dabei. Außerdem hielt ich gleich zwei Vorträge über den Kollodium-Nassplattenprozess und über meine Herangehensweise beim Porträtieren mit diesem historischen Verfahren im Murtal Museum. Dabei hatte ich viel Spaß und lernte auch viele tolle Menschen kennen. Judenburg ist immer einen Besuch wert, neben den Menschenbildern und dem Museum gibt es auch noch das schöne Puchmuseum und den beeindruckenden Sternenturm zu sehen. Danke an Heinz Mitteregger, Karoline Straner und Philipp Odelga für die Fotos von mir. Zusätzlich nochmal Danke für die Einladung!

Last week I was at the amazing Human Pictures (Menschenbilder) exhibition in Judenburg . Additionally I had two talks about the collodion wet plate process and how I approach my portraits with this technique in the Murtal Museum. I had so much fun there and met so many great people.
