Daria’s 1851 Magic Part II – More Handmade Analog Portraits with disappearing Tattoos

Posted on July 30, 2025July 30, 2025 By Markus

Another great collaboration with the wonderful Daria.
As you all know, I love capturing people’s portraits. But creating these super intense and intimate portraits with my fellow artist Daria (she’s also a portrait photographer, check her Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/dariawien/) is even more inspiring. The back-and-forth during the portrait session always leads to new ideas and perspectives.
Daria chose to listen to Mozart for one of the portraits. Even Mozart was born about 90 years before the wet plate process was invented. his music fits perfectly to this kind of portraiture.

Tintypes and Mozart – a great combination
Thanks again for working with me!

Interesting fact, tattoos disappear often with the wet plate collodion process. Here you can see the same effect. This is mostly because the ink contains blue color and the process is only sensible to blue color. (From about 370 to about 500nm, everything above is not visible for the process and will be dark/black).
The blue ink of the tattoos get brighter and with that tattoos often disappear.
At the end of the video you see how I prepare a glass plate for a wet plate negative. In an upcoming video you can see how I try to bring back the Tattoos with a salt print.

I put the images side by side yo you can see how the tattoos disappeared.
