In dem folgenden Video findet ihr das Making-of zu einem Nassplattenportrait mit Julia.
Diesmal zeige ich euch kein Ergebnis dazu, da zuerst der französische Fotograf Mathieu Stern
aus dieser digitalen Version in Photoshop eine Nassplattenversion zaubern wird.
Ich freue mich schon sehr auf das Ergebnis, dass er in einem Video präsentieren wird. Danach werden wir die digitale und die analoge Nassplattenversion miteinander vergleichen und darüber diskutieren. Es wird spannend 🙂

This video is an experiment with Mathieu Stern, a photographer from Paris. Most of you guys know him as the weird lens guy :). In the following video you will find the making-of with the beautiful model Julia, but not the result. I only will show the digital version and Mathieu will do his Photoshop magic to make it look like and wet plate picture. We will compare and discuss the result with the original wet plate on his YouTube channel. I’m looking forward to that – it will be fun 🙂

Was für ein Jahr – What a year

Dieses Jahr startete sehr ruhig, füllte sich aber sehr schnell mit vielen Aufgaben.
Just wow, von vielen Shootings, Workshops, TV Drehs, Shootings mit Feuer, bis über die Artikel, die ich für c’t Digitale Fotografie geschrieben habe, bis zu vielen anderen Veröffentlichungen, hat sich wirklich sehr viel getan
Dafür möchte ich mich heute bedanken, und zwar bei all meinen Kunden und Lesern, aber auch bei Pro-Digital, Hensel, Canon, diyphography, DPreview, Fstoppers, Gemeinde Muckendorf Wipfing, ct digitale Fotografie, Metafilm, Museum Atelier Seidel, ORF, Petapixel, Shotkit, Tether Tools, ThePhoblographer und Tricflash
Last but not least auch ein großes Danke an Alex, die in diesem verrückten Jahr immer geholfen hat wo es nur ging.
Das nächste Jahr kündigt sich auch schon an, mit einem weiteren spannenden Artikel in der c’t digitalen Fotografie, einem Video an dem ich schon seit einiger Zeit arbeite, ein ganz spezielles Portraitshooting und noch viel viel mehr.
Somit schließe ich diese Jahr ab mit einem Foto von meinem letzten Shooting mit der Schauspielering Glenna Weber:

This year started slow but transformed to a hell of a ride 🙂
Just wow, starting from lots of shootings, workshops, TV filmings, shootings with fire, to the articles I wrote for c’t digitale Fotografie and other publications happened a lot.

Crazy 360 Video of my Halloween Wet Plate Shoot

Ein Nassplatten-Shooting für Halloween stand diesmal auf dem Plan. Neben eher klassischen Halloween Motiven, wollte ich auch ein passendes Motiv für mich finden. Durch die Chemikalien bei den Vorbereitungen und wegen dem historische Prozess beim Shooting fühle ich mich immer wie Walter White “Heisenberg” (Bryan Cranston) von der TV Serie Breaking Bad.
Mit meiner 360 Grad Kamera habe ich die Entstehung dokumentiert, so verbinde ich die neueste Technik mit einem 160 Jahre alten Prozess.

Wie ihr sehen könnt, ist mein Selbstportrait sehr unrein an den Rändern. Diese Verunreinigungen habe ich durch das “nicht Reinigen” der Plattenkanten nach dem Silbernitratbad und der Kassette erreicht. Genau das macht die Platte noch einzigartiger. Außerdem liebe ich die Schärfe und die Schärfentiefe des Petzval Objektivs (ein Dallmeyer Petzval 2B 210mm F3,5 von ca. 1860). Und genau wegen diesem lichtstarten Objektiv läuft mein 6000W Hensel Tria Generator nur auf halber Leistung und das tortz verwendeter Softbox! Als Info: Nassplatten haben eine Lichtempfindlichkeit ähnlich ISO 0.5!

Why not do some Halloween Wet Plates – sure!
A Skull – A Mask and a Walter White “Heisenberg” (Bryan Cranston) themed Plate inspired from the TV Show Breaking Bad. I feel always like him when I prepare the chemicals for my collodion wet plate process. This is the first time, I combined this self-portrait with a 360-degree camera for the making-of video.
Combining hi-tech with a 160 year old process is fun 🙂

My self-portrait is pretty dirty on the borders of the plate as you can see. I achieved that with “not cleaning” the edges of the plates after the silver bath and not cleaning the plate holder. I think this makes this plate even more unique – it’s not all the time about perfection.
Beside this, I love the sharpness and the depth of field of that Dallmeyer Petzval 2B lens from about 1860 (its a 210mm F 3.5). This fast lens is also the reason my 6000 Watts Hensel Tria generator only runs on half power, even I used a softbox.
The palte has a ISO like sensitivity from about 0.5!

Portrait Workshop

Am Wochenende fand mein Portraitworkshop statt.
Neben dem Umgang mit Menschen vor der Kamera, habe ich auch technische Themen wie TTL und HSS blitzen angesprochen. Nach über 10 Stunden Vorführung und Informationen habe ich rauchende Köpfe gesehen 🙂

Wieder: Kollodium Nassplatten Workshop im originalgetreuen Fotoatelier Seidel von 1886

Da der letzte Workshop im Museum Seidel so sehr gefragt war, ist es wieder soweit. Es ist viel mehr als nur ein Workshop. Seht euch dazu einfach das Video vom letzten Workshop an:
Wie war es denn wirklich damals so?
In welchen Räumlichkeiten wurde gearbeitet, abgerechnet und geschlafen?
In meinem Workshop erfahrt ihr alles über die Nassplattenfotografie und lichtet selber Portraits mit dem professionellen Equipment von Hensel und Pro-Digital Wien ab.
Der Workshop wird im traditionellen Fotoatelier von 1886 abgehalten – inklusive zwei originalgetreuen Dunkelkammern – Fotostudio und vielen vielen mehr (Wir dürfen die antiken Kameras benutzen). Außerdem bekommt ihr eine Führung in deutscher Sprache durch das Museum. Ich freue mich wirklich sehr darüber, dass ich diesen Workshop Im Atelier Seidel halten darf. Das wird sicher ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis für alle.

Happy to announce a wet plate workshop in the original Atelier Seidel from 1886. We are using the original dark rooms, studio and equipment. Additionally there will be the professional lighting equipment from Hensel available for out entire shoot. It will be so much more than a workshop, because we get a personal tour in German. The whole workshop will be in German, but I wanted to let you guys know whats happening here. If there are enough people interested in an English workshop, please contact me here (phone or Mail) and I will organize one.

Coming home – Nassplattenworkshop

Bevor ich richtig mit meinem Blogartikel zum Workshop beginne, möchte ich euch vorab erzählen wie ich nach Krumau gekommen bin.
Meine alten Kameras kaufte ich bei einem Altwarenhändler in Tulln. Dieser sagte mir, dass meine Kameras von einem gewissen Herrn Seidel aus Krumau sind. Irgendwann erinnerte ich mich an diesen Satz und googelt nach Seidel und Krumau. Cesky Krumlov – eine Stadt voller Touristen uns Sehenswürdigkeiten – inklusive dem Museum Fotoatelier Seidel. Da will ich mal hin. Irgendwann später buchten wir einen Wellnesaufenthalt in Oberösterreich – garnicht weit weg von Krumau. Meine bessere Hälfte erinnerte mich an meinen Wunsch ins Atelier zu fahren und so taten wir es dann auch (Foto Dezember 2016)
Wow – was für ein tolles Museum, samt benutzbaren Dunkelkammern und Studio im Wunderschönen Krumau. Ich hatte damals meine analoge Pentax ME umhängen und fotografierte das Museum. Durch die Pentax kam ich mit Martin ins Gespräch. Nach etwas Fachsimpelei über analoge Fotografie, erzählte ich Martin über meine Nassplattenfotografie und meine Kameras die von hier sind. Darauf fragte er mich, ob ich Lust hätte einen Workshop hier in Krumau zu halten – der Rest ist Geschichte.
Es gab sogar so viele Anfragen, dass ich einen zweiten Workshoptag einplanen durfte. Ich hatte richtig viel Spaß mit den Teilnehmern beim Workshop und nahm auch eine meiner Kameras mit um die Gruppenfotos zu machen. Eine Heimkehr für die Kamera und ein besonderer Moment für mich. Im Leben beginnt immer alles mit einem kleinen Zufall, der in meinem Fall ganz schön große Auswüchse hatte.
An beiden Tagen haben alle ganz toll zusammengearbeitet und einzigartige Kunstwerke entstehen lassen. Trotz langen stimmverbrauchenden Tagen, war ich Sonntagabend noch voller Energie am Heimweg. Und das liegt nicht zuletzt an euch, da ihr mir so viel positive Energie zurückgegeben habt.
Deshalb gibt es schon einen neunen Vorabtermin am 4 und 5. November für den nächsten Workshop in Krumau. Sobald dieser fix bestätigt ist, gibt es wieder Infos über meine Kanäle.
Danke an Pro Digital und Hensel für die tolle Unterstützung. Großen Dank auch an Martin und sein Team vom Museum Seidel für die Bereitstellung der Räume und der vielen Liebe zum Detail. Seht einfach mal im Museum vorbei und bucht dort eine Fotosession. Ich durfte die Ergebnisse vorort sehen und war begeistert. Ihr leistet top Arbeit! Before I start this blog post about my workshop, I want to tell you how I came to Krumlov
I got my old cameras at an antique shop in Tulln, the guy there told me that my cameras origin is from Krumlov in the Czech Republic – from Mr. Seidel. So, I googled that later and figured, that there is a Museum Seidel in Krumlov. I was sure now, that I wanna see the museum sometimes. Later that year we planned a wellness weekend in Upper Austria – very close to Krumlov. Alex reminded me about the Museum and so we spent a visit there. (photo was taken on December 2016)
Wow – what a great museum that was, you got everything there, starting from original darkrooms to the original studio. I carried my analog Pentax ME with me to take pictures of our tour. Because of the old SLR, I had a conversation with Martin of the Museum. I told him about my wetplate photography and about my cameras that are from Mr. Seidel. After that, he asked me if I want to do a Workshop there and the rest is history.
For the workshop, I got so many requests that I did a second day too. I had tons of fun with all participants during the workshop. One of my cameras came with me to do a group shot on a bigger plate. “Coming home” with my camera was a very special moment for me. It makes my historic wetplate work even more unique. As you can see, all things in life art starting small. In this case, it turned out pretty big at the end.
I experienced great teamwork on both days, everybody created their unique piece of art. Despite long working days and little lack of voice on Sunday evening, I had still lots of energy left, because I got it from you guys during the workshop.
That’s the reason the next Workshop will probably be on 4th and 5th of November. As soon as this is fixed, you get all information about that on all my channels.
Thanks to Pro Digital and Hensel for their great support. A big thanks goes also to Martin and his team from Museum Seidel for letting us do the workshop in this great building and their love for detail. Be sure to book a photo shooting in Fotoatelier Seidel in Krumlov if you are there. You gonna love their work. Last but not least – thanks to Alex for doing a great reportage!

Musik und Gefühl auf Kollodium Nassplatte

Ein Pärchenbild inklusive Saxophon und Trompete soll es werden.
Natürlich wollte ich etwas Besonderes erstellen. Also dauerten die Vorbereitungen wieder mal etwas länger, aber dafür kann sich das Ergebnis sehen lassen.
Da die Chemie sehr frisch war, war die erste Platte nicht so rein wie ich sie gerne hätte. Dennoch hat mir das Ergebnis sehr gefallen. Die zweite Platte machten wir ohne die Instumente – Wunderschön die zwei, was meint ihr?

A couple portrait inclusive saxophone and trumped was the challange.
Of course, it should be something special, so I took lots of time to set everything up.
Because my chemicals were very fresh, I didn’t get a clean result as I wanted it – but still, I loved the outcome. We did the second wet plate without the instruments. A beautiful couple, what do you guys think?
