For quite some time now I was looking forward to this portrait session. Not only because I am a big fan and follow Jasmin since many years, but also because this is my last portrait for my inspired series book.


If you are not into the pool billiard scene, I will give you short overview.
Jasmin is a professional pool player and has her only Billiard Acedemy in Austria (Many years back I did a virtual tour there).
She won many Major Titles, I tried to list them here, but to be sure visit here Wikipedia page:

I think you get the idea now. As said, I follow here since many years, I think the first time I captured some frames of her was in St. Johann in Austria in 2008

I remember renting a Canon 5D MKII for this event. Jasmin won the straight pool competition back then.

2010 was also an exciting year. I went to Zagreb to cover the European Pool Championships. At the Europeans there are 4 Different competitions, 8 Ball, 9 Ball, 10 Ball and Straigt Pool. And guess what.

Jasmin won them all.

She was also (or maybe still is right now, this can change quite often) number one in the World ranking. The last time I covered an event was in Tallinn in Estonia. Basically I went there for my book to cover Henrik Larson and I was quite surprised to meet Jasmin there as well.

There will be many more stories and captures in my book.
And I was not very surprised that she won there also another gold medal
I think one of the things I enjoy a lot is her detication, professiolism and fighting spirit. I will write much more about that in my book.
Jasmin is also a big role model for many many people. Here for example Ana Gradišnik. This was in 2010 in Zagreb. I remember when Ana’s dad approached me and asked me to take some pictures while Ana is playing Jasmin.S
he is such a big fan and so excited to finally play her.
16 years later, I saw Ana Gradišnik playing as a strong player herself in Tallinn. Of course it taks lots of detication, practice and many other things to get there. Even more when you know that Ana is also a mum. But a good role model can also elevate your game.

Now to the wet plate portraits I did of Jasmin Ouschan

We worked on that one together and I really like how it turned out.
This 18x24cm tintype was captured with my
Dallmeyer 3B Petzval lens from the 19 century on a Kodak 2D large format camera
This tintype portrait of Jasmin was captured in my garden with my Century No.2 8×10 large format camera
I decided to work here with very old chemicals to archieve more imperfections and get some texture into this portrait.
This ambrotype of Jasmin Ouschan has quite a story to tell. First of al I wanted to do a more serious one to show her detication and fighting spirit. And as many of you know me, I like to do very clean plates. So I was a bit upset how this one turned out. But then I remembered that this is a glass plate that I cleaned on purpous in a way to get this streaks on the plate, but I forgot totally that this is that plate during our portrait session. So I captured afterwards also a nearly perfect tintype. But, now here comes a big BUT. At some point I liked this one much more, I started to love the texture that gives you a more organic feeling and because the plan was anyway to use a different kind of background on this glas splate, it workes very well. So its a planed not so planned happy accident that at the end turned exactly out how I expected to turn out when I prepared the glass plate. And here I want to also mention a discussion I had with the extremly talented and famous portrait photographer Gabriel Baharila .
As a prefectionist it’s often quite difficult to let go and let a process take over your work.
But if you are brave enough, you can get rewarded.
I remember when he told me that and couldnt agree more. Thanks Gabriel!

To get an Idea what this portrait can look like, I have two examples of paintings from Masha and her Dad (Thank you so much for this!!!!!!)

One of our first tests, I think it will need much more dark color in the center, but otherwise it already looks very interesting.
I think you get the idea. I really like the idea of using gold, not only because many old masters (painters) used it, but also because of Jasmin’s gold medals for example.
There is much more to test and there will be another posting including a video about this.

And now for me its time to write on my book and my plan is to give you guys daily updates as soon as I start with it.

If you have followed my postings here, you may have seen that I rarely post any additional images here. But I captured for most people lots of additional images for my book. They will be exclusively there only (I show also some during my talks)
And that also means that this images (beside the tintypes) here are will not necessarily part of my book.
For example we captured also images with My Hasselblad 500c and with some Others I used My Leica M2. So get excited for the book because there will be many things there that are not published anywhere yet.
